“So give orders that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. My men will work with yours, and I will pay you for your men whatever wages you set. You know that we have no one so skilled in felling timber as the Sidonians” 1 Kings 5:6.
There is a saying that he who pays the piper dictates the tune. This is true. But the piper can decide how much he will charge for playing that tune if what he plays is: in demand; rare or particularly difficult to play. A skill is cultivated when you identify, develop and deploy the potentials you have. The moment a skill is cultivated, a niche is carved out. It takes being skillful to stand out. It takes being skillful to name your price. Once you can do something no one else can do or few people can do, you can stand with the high and the mighty to negotiate your price.
Admittedly, being skillful is not that easy. It does not come on a platter of gold. It calls for diligence, focus, commitment, to a particular course of action. Ask those who are skillful, they will tell you that a lot have been put into it. For instance, you could train to be a brain surgeon, but to be a skillful brain surgeon calls for years of dedication, focus, and constant practising.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “UNTIL YOU ARE SKILLFUL, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE DISCARDED AND POORLY REMUNERATED”
