Theme: Be the first to broker peace
ANCHOR TEXT:
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift” Matthew 5:23-24.
Tsar Nicholas II, the last emperor of Russia and his entire family were wrongly shot and killed by the Red Guards in 1918, nearly a year after Lenin and the Bol Sheriks seized power in the Russian revolution. Eighty years later, however, Boris Yelsin, the Russian president in 1998, led his nation in an official apology for the murder of the Tsar at a moving ceremony in the cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress where his Romanor ancestors were buried. Watched by millions of Russians, Yelsin stood in somber silence before the grave and said he had no option but to be present to tell the truth and apologize!
When you unjustly cheat, murder, oppress anyone by the reason of your position or power which is momentary, you can never have peace because the spirit of the cheated or the dead never dies. That spirit will never let you rest, ‘there is no peace, says the Lord for the wicked’ (Isaiah 48:22). Ending a relationship or contractual agreement, leaving a place, or parting with people on the note of a quarrel or bitterness provokes a spirit. Apart from the fact, that they may cost you heaven, they may hunt you and withdraw your peace.
