“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds” Proverbs 27:23.
When Robinson Crusoe Swam ashore from his shipwrecked boat, the first thing he did was check out what stocks and guns and ammunition he had.
Once he knew that, he could assess the situation and move forward. Taking stock of the present means assessing the present situation; checking the viability of what is at hand; coming to terms with reality.
The essence is to learn and adjust certain things, such that what was learnt could be used to take better steps. If you do not know where you are before you start, you cannot really work efficiently towards becoming better. It is a wise man who first lays out his tools before he begins the job.
After the shipwreck, Robinson Crusoe took stock of the present and made a plan: ‘I will need a shelter to keep warm, some food, and something to do’.
And he set about building a thatched shelter on the beach, and so on. Sometimes, it is good to face up to reality so you can take positive action to address the situation.
